Frequently Asked Questions
about our Sea Freight shipping services
One of the main advantages of the sea freight service is that you can ship a large volume of freight at great value for money; the larger or heavier your goods, the better the value compared with air freight. The sea freight service can handle both standard and oversized pallets, and you can ship from 1 pallet up to full container loads.
You can only ship pallets via sea freight. Please be advised that this type of service only handles palletized shipments, and sending a parcel via sea freight would not be cost-effective.
For certain destinations, we can quote for a door to door option if the delivery address is a commercial location. Please email us with as much information as possible and we will send you a quote shortly. If the delivery point is a residential address you can only choose a door to port option.
If the port you want to send your shipment to is not included in the options displayed on our website, please email us with all the information and we will request a price for that destination.
Yes, you can. You will receive the Bill of Landing from us, which will include the details of an agent that can help you with the customs procedures to import the goods into the destination country.
If you are shipping your consignment via sea freight, you will need a commercial invoice containing HS/commodity codes. If you are shipping personal effects, you will need a proforma invoice (which we supply) and a packing list. 3 copies of the Invoice must be attached to the pallet. Please be advised that depending on the destination country and the nature of the goods, specific documentation may be required. If you require further information, please access the page of the country you want to ship to, and check the Q&A section or feel free to contact us via email.
We ship a wide range of goods by sea freight, such as car parts, tools, printed materials, ambient food items, and many more. For restricted items, please visit our Prohibited & Restricted Items section.
When shipping by sea freight, for both door-to-door imports and exports, you should expect to pay the following charges:
- For imports there will be duty + VAT to be paid based on the value of the goods and the commodity codes
- For exports there will be clearance, duties, local import taxes to be paid based on the value of the goods and the commodity codes
The Bill of Landing is the official sea freight document, showing the contract of the shipping method including the nature of the goods, where the goods are being shipped from and where the goods must be delivered. The Bill of Landing is issued by the transporter after the goods have left the Port of Loading and will be sent to both the sender and receiver of the goods.
Different Types of Sea Freight Shipping
The two main sea freight services are FCL (Full container load) or LCL (Less than container load), and depending on how large your freight is, you can choose the most convenient and cost-effective solution for your pallet delivery.
Sea freight forwarders transport goods in entire containers or share one between several multiple clients. Full container loads (FCL) are usually 40' and 20' containers loaded and sealed at origin.
When you don't have enough items to fill a full container, less-than-container-load (LCL) services can consolidate your cargo with other shipments in one container. The cost of shipping is distributed among the customers based on the amount of space they require.
Containers are loaded and sealed and then shipped by rail or road to a port. All international shipments must complete the customs clearance procedures of each country and some goods may require inspections.
