One of the questions we are often asked about is the import duty and taxes applicable to shipments coming to or leaving the UK.
If you are looking to book an import or an export with Pallet2ship, but you don’t know how much duty/tax will need to be paid, you can use the duty calculator * on our website. Once you have completed the brief form below, the calculator will show you the estimated amount * of import tax applicable to your consignment.
Below you will find some of the aspects you need to know about import duties and taxes:
- Import duties and taxes, also known as tariffs, are taxes applied on goods when they arrive into a country, and the customs authority will release the goods once the taxes have been paid.
- Duty and taxes are usually calculated as a percentage of the value of the goods that are imported. These tariffs can vary depending on many factors, including the country of origin of the goods, the type of goods, the destination country and the classification of the goods under the Harmonized Tariff System (HTS). The goods may also be subject to additional taxes, such as excise taxes and enhanced duty rates, depending on the nature of the goods.
- There are also some types of goods which are exempt from tax and duty when they are imported, such as personal effects and household items, goods that are coming into the country for repair and will be returned to the sender, goods that are being temporarily imported and will be exported within a specific period, medical or scientific goods, samples, and many others. If you would like to find out more about the types of goods exempt from import duties, please check with Customs Authority in the destination country.
- Taxes that apply to imports from the EU and the rest of the World into the UK include duties (taxes on goods imported from foreign countries) and VAT, also known as GST in other countries. The import duty that applies to a particular product will depend on the type of product and its origin. Since 2021, most goods traded between the EU and the UK are subject to tariffs, with some exceptions for certain goods. Also, there may be other charges depending on the goods and origin, such as customs clearance fees, inspection fees, handling fees, quarantine fees etc. However, please keep in mind that the calculator on this page will only give you an indication of the duties and taxes applicable to your shipment.
